When shopping for a ''Portable'' podium or lectern, one must first decide on whose definition of the word ''Portable'' they accept. Like so many other businesses and professions today, the podium and lectern industry has its own quirks and subtle nuances that differentiate it from all the rest. To some manufacturers, a portable unit is a full sized unit made out of particle board and an inexpensive wood veneer covering which reduces the weight of the same unit if built with solid hardwood. Such units are always between 50 - 75 pounds to start and proceed upward on the scale from there. They are relatively easy for two men to lift but nearly impossible for one--especially if going up strong inclines or stairs.
Others feel as though the word ''Portable'' refers to any podium or lectern with wheels on it (regardless of the materials with which it is constructed) that can be moved, for example, from the center of an auditorium stage to the backstage area quickly and by one person. This, however, is not a unit that can be transported all across campus quickly and effortlessly by one person.
Others view ''Portable'' as a cold steel welded device, about twenty pounds, and collapsable to a reduced height of about four feet so that one can carry the unit, for example, from one classroom to the next, assuming the classrooms are located right down the hall from one another. They are definitely unintended for effortless carriage from one end of a college campus, or from one building to the other, by one person. Should one be foolish enough to attempt this feat, on their own, major muscle strain will be the end result of having done so.
